Remembering Lucille Ball, born August 6, 1911 and passed away April 26, 1989.
Lucille Désirée Ball was an American actress, comedienne, model and studio executive and producer. She was the star and producer of sitcoms I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, Here’s Lucy, and Life with Lucy, as well as comedy television specials aired under the title The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.
Ball founded Desilu with her husband, Desi Arnaz in 1950. After the couple divorced in 1960, Lucy bought out Desi’s interest and ownership of the studio.
When Desilu bought Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek is…-pitch in April 1964, Lucille Ball – as owner of the company – became in effect the first identifiable individual legal and commercial owner of what was yet to become the Star Trek franchise. As was customary at the time in the motion picture industry, the moment Roddenberry signed his contract, he lost all rights and title to his creation, save for his “created by” credit (with financial compensation for work actually done to be individually determined on a per production contract basis).
On April 18, 1989, Ball complained of chest pains at her home in Beverly Hills and was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she was diagnosed with a dissecting aortic aneurysm and underwent surgery to repair her aorta and a successful seven-hour aortic valve replacement.
Shortly after dawn on April 26, Ball awoke with severe back pains then lost consciousness; she died at 5:47 a.m. PDT at the age of 77. Doctors determined that Ball had succumbed to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm not directly related to her surgery.
